MAINTENANCE OF THE M113 PER CARRIER - OD1601 LESSON 1/TASK 1
The left drum connects a
planetary gear to the left output shaft and the right drum is similarly connected
to the right output shaft. The output shafts are connected to the left and right
The brake drums link mechanically to the steering levers in the
driver's cab.
When the carrier is driven in a straight line, the steering unit
delivers power equally to both output shafts.
Pressure on either steering lever
slows or stops the corresponding brake drum and reduces the speed of the output
shaft. The differential action within the steering unit increases the speed of the
opposite output shaft and causes the carrier to turn in the direction of the
applied brake.
Equal pressure, exerted simultaneously on both steering levers,
slows or stops the carrier by preventing further differential action.
During
operation, the differential is safeguarded by a transmitter and warning light
circuit in the oil system.
