Introduction
The M113A1/A2 full tracked armored personnel carrier (APC) is a lightweight, low
silhouette carrier, designed to transport 12 passengers, plus the driver.
The
carrier can also be used as a cargo, litter, or a reconnaissance carrier. Although
intended primarily for operation over cross-country terrain, the carrier is
amphibious and can cross inland lakes and streams.
The carrier is propelled and
steered on both land and water by movement of the tracks.
The M113A1/A2 carrier
can also be parachute-dropped to troops in the field.
A caliber .50 flexible
machine gun is mounted on an armored cupola located on the hull top plate just
forward of center.
In this lesson, the function and operation of the M113A1/A2
powerplant, fuel, electrical and brake systems will be discussed.
