INTRO TO M2/M3 BFV - OD0456 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
b.
Firing Ports. The IFV is the only version of the BFV that has firing
ports. Since the IFV carries the troops to the battlefield, it must allow
them to engage targets from inside the vehicle.
Therefore, there are six
threaded ball ports that serve as firing ports for 5.56mm, M231 firing port
weapons.
Each firing port permits the squad members to engage external
targets from behind armor protection.
In addition to the firing ports,
there is also a firing port vent system onboard.
The firing port vent
system removes toxic gases produced by the firing port weapons. An external
fan sucks these gases from the brass-catcher bag through a duct system and
expels them outside the vehicle (figure 2).

Seating Configuration. The IFV and the CFV are equipped with separate
seats for each crew and squad member. The IFV has three seats for the crew
members and six seats for the squad members. The CFV has three seats for
the crew members and two seats for the squad members. In addition, there is
also a jump seat in case the M3 has to carry an additional person to or from
the area of operation. Figure 3 shows the seating configuration for each of
these vehicles.
