TROUBLESHOOTING THE HMMWV - OD1616 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
Step 1. Check the
oil level following the procedures contained in LO
9-2320-280-12. Fill as necessary.
Step 2.
Check the geared hub for output spindle endplay.
To do
this, raise and support the vehicle. Now grasp the tire at the outer
edges and attempt to move the tire up and down.
If any spindle
movement is apparent, adjust the spindle bearings.
The procedures
for adjusting the spindle bearings can be found in paragraph 6-12,
page 6-30 of the TM.
Step 3. Check the halfshaft retaining capscrew. Remove the tire and
wheel and remove the geared hub upper access plug and capscrew.
Apply sealing compound to the threads of the capscrew and tighten the
capscrew to 40 ft-lb. Now tighten the access plug to 8 to 13 ft-lb.

Halfshafts.
Troubleshooting the Malfunction: HALFSHAFT NOISY.
Step 1.
Check the halfshaft for damaged boots and boot clamps at
both ends.
Replace the damaged components following the procedures
contained in paragraph 6-8, page 6-14 of the TM.
Step 2.
Check the halfshaft mounting.
The halfshaft to rotor
capscrews should be tightened to 48 ft-lb and the halfshaft retaining
capscrews (in the geared hub) should be tightened to 40 ft-lb.
Tighten any loose fasteners.
Step 3.
Check the halfshaft joints for play or looseness.
To do
this, grasp the halfshaft at each end and attempt to move the joint
up and down.
If any movement is apparent, replace the halfshaft
following the procedures contained in paragraph 6-8, page 6-14 of the
TM.

Brakes (Parking and Service).
(1) Troubleshooting the Malfunction:
PARKING BRAKE DOES NOT HOLD
VEHICLE.
Step 1.
Check the parking brake adjustment and be sure that the
linkage operates freely. Adjust the parking brake or replace damaged
parts following the procedures in paragraph 7-2, page 7-2 of the TM.
