MAINTENANCE OF FORKLIFTS - OD1660 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
(4) The operator then releases the service brake, presses down on
the accelerator pedal, and proceeds to perform the task.
NOTE
Just before the vehicle leaves the surf, the
radiator fan control lever is placed in the OFF
position.
After leaving the surf, the radiator
control lever is placed in the ON position.
CAUTION
Do not allow water to exceed the 5 foot level
mark, measured from the crest of the waves.
Proceed
slowly
through
the
surf,
keeping
constantly alert for holes and ocean bottom
softness.
When the tide is out, the bottom is
especially soft. If the truck begins to mire, do
not stop, maneuver until free.
The differential
lock
may
be
used
when
necessary
to
gain
additional traction.
(5) The operator should observe the ramp of the landing craft
before entering, and he should enter the craft from the center of the
ramp on the crest of a wave, rather than between the waves, to
compensate for shifting. He should keep his sight on the top of the
left fork. The fork tilt control lever should be used to balance the
load when going up or down the ramp.
CAUTION
Brakes are less
effective
immediately
after
leaving the surf.
(6) While loading and unloading materials from the landing craft,
and if the conditions warrant, four-wheel steering can be used.
First, the front wheels should be aligned and the FWD-NEUT-REV
control lever placed in the FWD position.
Then the CRAB and CRAMP
control lever is placed in the desired position.
