MAINTENANCE OF FORKLIFTS - OD1660 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
NOTE
Load carrying position should be 20-24 inches
above the ground to the heel of the forks and 21-
23 inches from the tread of the front tire to the
heel of the forks.
The inner and outer boom
should be marked at this point for quick
reference.
(2) The engine should be started and the fork lift lever pulled
back. The forks should then be raised from 12 to 18 inches from the
operating surface.
(3) The parking brake should be disengaged and force applied to
the service brakes.
Then, the transmission range control lever
should be put in the desired position, depending on the weight of the
load. At this point, the FWD-NEUT-REV control lever should be placed
in the desired position and the service brakes released.
The
operator presses the accelerator pedal down and proceeds to perform
his task.
e.
Driving is the Surf. There are times when the
forklift operator
will be required to load or unload equipment on, or from, vessels in
the surf.
For him to perform this task, he should follow these
procedures:
NOTES
Before starting the engine, the operator should
first make sure that the flywheel housing drain
plug is in place.
If transporting a load, the fork extension
control lever is pulled back to retract the load
as close to the center of the truck as possible
in order to balance the load.
(1) The first step the operator should take when operating the
fork lift in the surf is to start the engine (figure 4 on the
following page).
