Follow a series of logical checks and tests to verify the
probable cause of a malfunction, or to identify unknown causes
by following the troubleshooting procedures given.

Determine what parts you must replace or repair, or what area
of the transmission requires maintenance action.
Organization maintenance does the majority of the troubleshooting,
acting on symptoms reported by the operating personnel. Therefore,
when you receive a transmission from Direct Support maintenance,
you have the responsibility to verify the diagnosis made by
Organization maintenance. Additionally, there are troubleshooting
tasks assigned only to Direct Support maintenance, such as testing
solenoids and wiring harnesses after removal of the transmission
top cover.
Troubleshooting authorized for this manual starts with reported
symptoms
of
the
transmission
malfunction
and
takes
into
consideration troubleshooting done at lower levels of maintenance.
This TM classifies all troubleshooting by symptom, at the
operator's level.
Each of the troubleshooting procedures gives the
tools required,
instructions for use of the tools, and the results
you can expect.
Depending on the results of the test, the manual
directs you to
another test, or to a maintenance procedure
in chapter 4,
Transmission Maintenance Procedures.
Consider this situation: you have the responsibility to maintain
and repair transmissions. A transmission comes into your shop and
Department of the Army (DA) Form 2404 identifies the symptoms,
tells what troubleshooting organization maintenance has done, and
with what results. The first thought that comes into your head is,
what do I do? Your training has taught you that the best way to
repair the transmission is to use the manual; so you get the
manual. Your next question is, how do I start? If you turn to the
cover of the TM, on the right side, you find a listing for
Troubleshooting, which tells you what page to go to.
On the first page of Troubleshooting (chapter 2), is an index which
lists a Symptom Index, and gives you a page reference. Turn to the
page indicated, and find the listing for your symptom in the
Symptom Index. Next to
