The Front Cover. The TM cover not only provides the TM number, it
has an index on it. This index provides you with a quick reference
to some of the most important areas of this manual (e.g.,
troubleshooting
procedures,
general
maintenance
instructions,
transmission maintenance procedures, etc.).
Inside the front cover (pages a and b), this TM has a summary of
safety warnings. Additionally, the TM places safety warnings prior
to any maintenance task, so you are aware that you are starting a
task in which you could injure or kill yourself or someone else.
Always take the precautions described in the warnings.
(This
lesson describes safety warnings in part C.)
Table of Contents. After the safety warnings, a table of contents
lists the main subject areas and the page number where they begin
(see appendix B). The following are the main subject areas listed
in the table of contents.

Chapters.
This TM lists some main topics by chapter title
only; other listings show the chapter and its section numbers.
When the table of contents shows only the chapter title for a
subject, you find the chapter index, which guides you through
the subjects in the chapter, on the page where the chapter
starts.
For example, if you look at the table of contents reproduced in
appendix B, you find it shows no sectional divisions under
When you go to
the start of chapter 3 in the actual TM (not shown), you find a
chapter index that serves as a guide for all the topics within
the chapter.

Sections.
Whenever the table of contents shows section
headings beneath the chapter, all sections have their indexes
located
at
the
beginning
of
their
particular
section;
therefore, there is no chapter index.
For example, if you look at the table of contents reproduced in
appendix B, you find it shows no sectional divisions under
chapter 4, Transmission Maintenance Procedures. When you go to
the start of chapter 4 in the actual TM (not shown), you again
find no chapter index. However, when you go to page 4-1 where
section I begins, there is an index, but this index is only for
section I, instead of the
