The starter motor is a 24
volt, direct current, solenoid operated, enclosed shift lever engine
starter with eight brushes retained in four brush holders. The drive
clutch is a sprag type overrunning clutch, that does not disengage
during intermittent engine firing and thus prevents damage to the
pinion and the ring gear teeth. The pinion remains engaged until the
solenoid circuit opens.
Pinion clearance is adjustable.
There are
two types of starters used on this engine.
o Nonwater proof starter equipped with two inspection covers and
gaskets.
o Waterproof starter equipped with two inspection plugs.
The following are the major components of the starter motor:
o Frame assembly.
o Armature.
o Commutator end plate assembly.
o Brush holder assembly.
o Brushes.
o Motor drive clutch.
o Drive housing.
