q. The Fuel Injector (Fig. 13).
The fuel injector enables
starting directly on diesel fuel and permits the use of a simple,
open type combustion chamber. No high pressure fuel lines, air-fuel
mixing, or vaporizing devices are required.
The fuel injector
performs the following functions:
o Creates the
high
fuel
pressure
required
for
efficient
injection.
o Meters and injects fuel in the exact amount required to
handle the load on the engine.
o Atomizes the fuel for mixing with the air in the cylinder.
o Permits continuous fuel flow.

r. The Fuel Pump (Fig. 14).
The fuel pump is a positive
displacement gear pump with circulates fuel from the fuel tank
through the fuel injectors.
The unused portion of the fuel returns
to the fuel tank via the fuel manifold and return lines.
Incorporated in the pump body is a spring-loaded, normally closed,
relief valve. This valve operates only if the
