MAINTENANCE OF THE M88A1 - OD1672 - LESSON 1/TASK 2
using dry-cleaning solvent or mineral spirits paint thinner. Use only clean
fluid for the bearings. Wipe seals with a clean cotton cloth. Check wheel
disk tires for gouges, chips, cuts or separation from the rim that equal
half the original contact area around the entire wheel. (Have an assistant
drive the vehicle slowly while you check for bent roadwheels and flat spots
on a roadwheel which may cause thumping during vehicle use.) If evidence of
at least 50% width tire separation from the rim is found, or if damage to
the tire is sufficient to cause "thumping" during use, replace the
roadwheel.
Inspect the hub for elongated mounting holes and excessive
dents; inspect bearings and seals for wear, pitting or other damage.
c.
Repair.
If the inspection reveals any of the conditions listed in
paragraph 5a, on the previous page, the roadwheel should be replaced using
the procedures in TN 9-2350-256-20.
6.
Conclusion
This task described the operation of the components of the suspension system
and the procedures for track, sprocket, and roadwheel classification.
Before going into the next lesson, complete the following practical
exercise, which is designed to reinforce the main points of this lesson.
