M2/M3 BFV: TROUBLESHOOTING - OD1610 - LESSON 2/TASK 1
elevation drive, and TOW elevation drive.
Also, it consists of the TOW
launcher lift mechanism, electronic control assembly, gunner's and
commander's handstations, and three gyros (gun, hull, and turret).
The TOW launcher lift mechanism lifts and lowers the TOW launcher.
It
consists of an electric motor which drives a gearbox. The turret traverse
drive, gun elevation drive, and TOW elevation drive are used to position the
25mm gun and the TOW launcher.
Each drive consists of an electric motor
which drives a gearbox. The turret drives can be activated by moving the
gunner's or commander's handstations. To prevent accidental control action,
palm switches on the hand controls must be pressed before the handstation is
moved. The movement of the handstation causes the turret or weapon to move.
All drives can be manually operated by rotation of hand wheels at the
gunner's station.
When the turret is in the stabilized mode, the three
gyros sense turret and vehicle orientation and rate of movement. The gyros
send signals to the electronic control assembly which controls the drive
mechanisms.
(c) Turret Travel Lock. A turret travel lock is above the turret
shield door. The travel lock's linkage and gears can lock the turret in a
given position. Also, it can prevent turret rotation when the azimuth drive
is in action.
The travel lock lever moves over the center to prevent
release by mistake.
(d) Turret Shield.
A metal shield surrounds the turret basket.
The shield keeps the turret basket swing area free of debris.
Also, it
gives crew members safe access from the rear of the vehicle to the driver's
station.
In addition, it holds stowage items.
The shield has a sliding
door which faces the rear. The door can be opened from inside or outside of
the turret. The door is closed whenever the turret is moving under power.
(e) Coax Machinegun Access Doors.
The coax machinegun access
doors give access to the gun when it is mounted in the turret. Foam rubber
seals on the door prevent toxic fumes from going into the turret. Also, the
doors protect from ballistic fragments.
