b. Detail Description.
In the paragraphs that follow, a detailed
description of the components that comprise each of these systems will be
discussed.
(1) Turret.
(a) Hatches. Two hatch covers serve the commander and the gunner.
Both hatch covers can be latched in either the open or closed position. The
commander's hatch cover can also be latched in the pop-up position.
From
this position, the commander has 360 range of sight.
Both hatch covers
have inside locks which prevent entry from the outside.
Backup locks can
prevent opening of the hatch by mistake.
Padding on the inside of the
surface and hatch rings protects from ballistic missile fragments.
The commander's hatch cover has a cable release in the squad area. In the
event that the commander and gunner are injured, the hatch cover can be
popped by pulling the cable release. This permits entry to the turret from
outside the vehicle when both hatch covers are locked inside.
