M2/M3 BFV ENGINE STARTING/CHARGING SYS - OD1603 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
Step 1.
Move the MASTER POWER switch (1)(figure 1 on page 8) to the ON
position.
The volt gage indicator should be pointing either to the yellow or green
zone.
Step 2.
Since the volt gage indicator is in the yellow zone, move the ENGINE
ACCESSORY switch (3) to the ON position.
Move the GEAR SELECTOR to the START
position for 5 seconds and release. The starter should have cranked the engine.
Step 3.
Check the generator output adjustment plug (1)(figure 5 on page 16) to
ensure it is installed in the generator at the proper voltage setting (27 volts for
atmospheric temperatures above 90 F and 29 volts for temperatures below 50 F.)
Step 4.
Step 3 above revealed that the generator adjustment plug is installed
at the proper setting. At this time, the engine would be put into operation. Upon
putting the engine into operation, it is found that the starter does disengage
properly and the engine remains in operation.
Ensure that the COLD START switch
(figure 8 on the following page) is in the OFF position and that the instrument
panel gages and indicators are operating properly.
Step 5.
If the instrument panel gages and indicators are operating properly,
stop the engine and perform the following functions:
(1) Leave the MASTER POWER switch (1)(figure 1 on page 8) and ENGINE ACCESSORY
switch (3) in the ON position.
(2) Move the GEAR SELECTOR to the START position for five seconds and release it.
CAUTION
Do not hold the GEAR SELECTOR in the START position for
more than 30 seconds; otherwise, it can damage the starter.
Repeat this procedure five times, wait fifteen seconds, and
repeat this procedure an additional two times.
(3) The STE-M1 (VTM only) should be connected to the vehicle distribution box
jack 1A1J14 (7)(figure 1, page 8) and Test Number 90 (GENERATOR CURRENT DRAW)
should be performed.
