also located in the transmission.
The brakes on the BFV are oil-cooled
multi discs.
(3) Suspension System.
The suspension system on the BFV is of the
return roller type, with a torsion bar springing media. There are six pairs
of roadwheels on each side of the vehicle. The roadwheels are 24 inches in
diameter and 4 inches wide. There are also 4 shock absorbers on each side
at the number 1, 2, 3, and 6 roadarm positions. This system allows up to 14
inches of vertical roadwheel travel.
(4) Track System.
The BFV is equipped with a steel single pin type of
track with detachable rubber pads.
There are 83 track shoes on the left
side and 82 track shoes on the right side. The track pitch is 6 inches with
a width of 21 inches.
d.
Vehicular Performance.
General Electric transmission allow the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 30
miles per hour (mph) in 19 seconds; and the efficient suspension system
allows the vehicle to operate at speeds of 30 to 35 mph cross-country, and
41 mph on roads, with an operating range of 300 miles on 175 gallons of
fuel.
The vehicle's cross-country mobility is enhanced by its ability to
negotiate obstacles and steep terrain. The BFV can climb and descend slopes
of up to 60 percent, and traverse side slopes of 40 percent. In addition,
the vehicle can cross an 8 foot 4 inch trench, climb a 36 inch vertical
wall, and ford 42 inches of water at a speed of 4.5 miles per hour (mph).

These
various components of the protection system will he discussed in the
subparagraphs that follow.
