INTRO TO M2/M3 BFV - OD0456 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
fully combat-loaded weight, we find that the fuel, crew, and OVE have a
combined total weight of 7,538 pounds.
The vehicle can be transported on either the C-5A or the C-141. For the BFV
to be transported on the C-5A, the turret must be locked in the travel
position.
Tile antennae must either be tied down or removed, all hatches
must be in the closed position, and all loose gear must be secured. For the
vehicle to be transported aboard the C-141, the following items must be
removed and loaded aboard the aircraft on pallets: all vehicle side armor,
the commander's and gunner's hatches, munitions, and the antennae.
The
suspension system on the vehicle must be restrained to lower the vehicle 4
inches. The above measurements reduce the vehicle weight 33,075 pounds and
the size to 9.7 feet wide and 8.5 feet high.
A fully combat-loaded BFV
exerts a ground pressure of 7.7 pounds per square inch, and has a ground
clearance of 18 inches.
b.
Personnel Capacity. The M2 IFV can seat nine troops; three seats are
for the vehicle commander, gunner, and the driver, while the remaining six
seats are for the embarked infantry squad. The M3 CFV can seat five troops;
three seats for the commander, gunner, and the vehicle driver, while the
remaining two seats are for the two embarked squad members.
In addition,
the CFV has a jump seat installed in the event that another individual must
be carried to or from the battlefield.
c.
Characteristics and Capabilities of the Mobility System. The mobility
system on the BFV is composed of the engine, transmission, and suspension.
The mobility and manueverability of the CFV are unparalleled among track
vehicles today, and make it an excellent companion to the M1 Abrams tank.
(1) Engine. The engine is a Cummins VTA-903T turbocharged diesel. The
engine is a 4-cycle type that displaces 903 cubic inches.
The engine
produces 500 horsepower (gross) and has a gross horsepower-to-weight ratio
(2) Transmission.
Mated to the engine is a General Electric HMPT-500
hydromechanical transmission with hydrostatic steering. This
