b. The Torque Converter Lockup Clutch (fig. 1-10).
The lockup
clutch consists of three main elements located between the converter
drive cover and turbine:
Piston.
Clutch plates.
Backing plate.
The piston and backing plate rotate with the converter pump, and the
clutch plates, splined to the convert turbine, are between the piston
and backing plate.
When the forward clutch housing assembly rotates fast enough, the
lockup shift valve directs clutch apply pressure to the lockup clutch
piston.
When lockup occurs, it provides a direct drive from the
engine to the transmission.
As the forward clutch assembly rotates
more slowly, the same valve automatically releases the lockup clutch.
