particular malfunction.
Once the mechanic understands the nature of
the malfunction and has gathered the necessary tools and equipment
together,
the
next
step
is
to
configure
the
vehicle
for
troubleshooting. Configuring the vehicle for troubleshooting includes
the following:
(1) The vehicle should be parked.
(2) The parking brake should be set.
(3) The engine should be shut down.
(4) The transmission selector lever should be in the PARK position.
(5) The wheels should be chocked.
After the above procedures have been performed, the mechanic is ready
to begin troubleshooting the malfunction.
3.
Troubleshooting and Repair
In the following paragraphs, we will troubleshoot and repair seven
malfunctions.
These malfunctions come from both the mechanical and
electrical systems of the M977 FOV.
For the purposes of this subcourse, we will be following fictitious
individuals as they perform the troubleshooting and repair procedures.
It is assumed that our fictitious individuals are proficient in the
use of any piece of special test equipment that they may be required
to use to perform the troubleshooting procedures, such as the
simplified test equipment/internal combustion engine (STE/ICE) test
set, and the multimeter.
a.
Engine System Troubleshooting.
For this malfunction, we will
follow SGT Elliott as she troubleshoots the malfunction ENGINE FAILS
TO CRANK, and reaches the conclusion that the starter motor needs to
be replaced.
Prior to
beginning the actual troubleshooting procedure, SGT Elliott
performs
the preliminary procedures that were cited in paragraph 2c on
pages 43
and 44. After these procedures have been completed, she is
ready to
begin the actual troubleshooting procedure.
