The M992 Carrier, Ammunition, Tracked is designed to transport

155mm ammunition from ammunition depots/supply points in support

of the M109/M110A2 family of howitzers. Since the M992 has the

same hull, power pack, drive train, and suspension as the M109/

110A2 family of howitzers, it is able to keep up with the

howitzer in convoy or during other type of moves. (Page 2, para

TM 9-2350-267-20 is the current manual to be used when performing

organizational maintenance on the M992 carrier. (Page 2, para 4)

Extinguish fire in the engine and crew compartments.

Because of the cargo carried on the M992 ammunition carrier, an

efficient fire protection system is essential.

The detection

system element of the AFES plays an important part in detecting a

fire and triggers the apparatus to activate the fire extinguisher

system.

The AFES is designed to put out hydrocarbon type fuel

fires and is not used for electrical fires. (Page 2, para 4)

The engine AFES, the crew AFES, and the AFES Manual Discharge

System are the three subsystems of the AFES. (Page 3, para 1)
