MAINTENANCE OF THE M88A1 - OD1672 - LESSON 2/TASK 1
FIGURE 25.
AIR INTAKE SCREEN.
Step 4. Unscrew the filter element wing nut (6) (figure 17 on page 39) and
remove the filter (7).
Step 5. Rinse away dust from the filter element with clean water at no more
than 10 psi. Do not rap the filter element against a hard surface as this
will dent it and damage the seals. The filter must not be washed more than
two times, since too much washing will destroy the paper element. Each time
it is washed, scribe the date in the metal base of the filter.
This
determines how many times it has been washed.
When it needs a third
washing, throw it away.
Never use compressed air to clear the filter
element except in an emergency. If it must be cleaned with compressed air,
use air at 100 psi or less, holding the air nozzle no closer than 1 inch
from the filter and blowing the dust from the inside out. (Use a lower air
pressure if possible.) High pressure might rip the element and allow dirt
to enter and damage the engine. Never use air on a wet filter element.
Step 6.
Soak the filter element in lukewarm water using a non-foaming
detergent for 15 minutes.
Do not use solvents, fuel oils or gasoline to
clean the filter element.
Step 7.
Shake the filter slightly before removing it from the water.
Step 8.
Rinse the filter with clean water at low pressure from the inside
out.
