crankshaft. By means of a shrink fit, the starter ring gear attaches
to the flywheel.
e. The Idler Gear and Bearing Assembly (Fig. 7). Located on the
flywheel (rear) end of the engine is the idler gear and bearing
assembly.
It meshes with the camshaft and crankshaft gears and
rotates on a stationary hub. The stationary hub attaches directly to
the cylinder block by a bolt that passes through the flywheel
housing, hub, and end plate. A thrust washer, on both sides of the
idler gear and bearing assembly, controls the movement of the idler
gear and bearing assembly.
