M2/M3 BFV: FIRE SUPPRESSION SYST - OD1607 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
(a) Automatic Operation. When the FIRE SUPPRESSION switch on
the driver's instrument panel is in the AUTO position, the presence
of a fire will be detected by sensors and halon 1301 will be
automatically discharged from the pressurized bottles into the crew
compartment to quickly put out the fire.
With the FIRE SUPPRESSION switch in
the MANUAL position, the fire suppression system in the crew
compartment must be operated manually.
In this mode, the fire
bottles can be discharged from outside the vehicle by pulling the
external fire suppression handle or from inside the vehicle by
pulling the internal fire suppression handle (figure 2 on the
previous page).

(2) Fire Sensors.
Four fire sensors (one shown in figure 3)
are located in the crew compartment.
These optical sensors detect
the presence of fire and send electrical signals to the control
electronics activating the solenoid valves on the pressurized fire
bottles causing the bottles to discharge into the compartment when a
fire is present. Fire sensor 1MT1 is located on the left hull behind
the driver. Fire sensor 1MT2 is located on the right hull behind the
driver.
Sensor 1MT3 is located on the turret, and sensor 1MT4 is
located on the right hull in the squad compartment.
