AFES fire extinguishers will discharge automatically when the SCEA
receives an electrical impulse from the OFSA unit, or manually when
a crew member operates the MANUAL DISCHARGE toggle switch on the
crew T/A panel.
Upon activation of the crew AFES, the ventilator
blower automatically turns on to the exhaust mode within eight
seconds after fire extinguisher discharge. However, the crew must
open the exhaust blower vent. Additionally, two crew and one engine
compartment AFES fire extinguishers may be activated from outside of
the vehicle by pulling the lanyard cable pull handle located near
the drivers hatch (see Figure 8).
NOTE:
There are two CF3BR (monobromotrifluoromethane) fire extinguishers
located in the crew compartment and are separate from the AFES. One
portable extinguisher is located on the right side near the canister
rack and one on the lower rear door. These fire extinguishers may

AFES Manual Discharge System (AFES/MDS).
The AFES/MDS system allows the vehicle crew to manually activate, by use of
mechanical means, one engine and two crew compartment fire extinguishers.
The two components which make up the AFES/MDS are the LANYARD ASSEMBLY and
the LANYARD CABLE PULL HANDLE.
A description and an illustration for the
AFES/MDS components are below.
