Introduction
The recovery vehicle, full tracked; medium, M88A1 is an armored battlefield
recovery vehicle designed to perform recovery of medium and light tracked
vehicles under hostile enemy fire.
The vehicle's capabilities include
recovery of battle damaged or mired vehicles that cannot be operated under
their own power and moving them onto a hard surface road, where they may be
loaded onto transport-type vehicles for evacuation to a maintenance
collection point or to a maintenance activity.
The recovery mission of this vehicle requires its off-the-road operation
under extreme climatic conditions, ranging from arctic to desert-type
temperatures, and in weather conditions such as snow, mud, and dust. The
strain and wear placed on the various vehicle systems are such that it
requires constant attention by the unit maintenance personnel.
