Spall Liners.
The M113A3 has spall liners to protect against the effects of armor
piercing rounds that may penetrate the exterior armor plate. Acting
as barriers against flying metallic chips, the liners improve the
survivability of the crew and carrier components mounted in the
personnel compartment.
The A3 configuration has four right side
spall liners and four left side spall liners.
Three locking pins
hold each liner in place.
When it becomes necessary to gain access to equipment behind the
spall liners, remove the locking pins and slide the liners to the
front or rear, as needed.
Additional spall liners are mounted
throughout the carrier crew compartment, specifically on the rear
upper hull, the forward bulkhead, the cargo hatch cover, the ramp,
and the forward upper left and right sides. Figure 1-25 illustrates
the four left side spall liners in the closed and open positions.
