PART E - RECOGNITION OF THE NEW MODIFIED HULL
1.
General.
The modifications applied to the M113A3 configuration of the carrier
family are a result of the Product Improvement Package. This Product
Improvement Package included the addition of left and right side
armor external fuel tanks (mounted on the left and right rear corners
of the hull), the installation of spall liners, and fixing points for
the bolt-on armor.
The spall liners mount throughout the personnel
compartment and bolt-on the armor mounts on the front and right front
areas of the hull.
Each of the modifications is addressed in
subsequent paragraphs.
2.
Armored External Fuel Tanks.
All of the A3 configurations have the armored external fuel tanks;
additionally, some the A2 configuration have had the external armored
fuel tanks added.
Previous carrier models had fuel tanks,
constructed of fiberglass, mounted in the left rear portion of the
carrier between the hull armor plating and the personnel compartment,
thus presenting the possibility of fire in the crew compartment,
should the fuel tank be hit by penetrating rounds.
Clearly, the
armored external tank lessens the potential safety hazard to crew and
equipment. Figure 1-24 is provided to assist you in identifying the
mounted location of the armored external fuel tanks.
