f. Engine fire sensing elements are also located under the forward
battery door, under the left transmission door, and under the engine deck
cover.
Removal and installation steps for these sensing elements are
Regardless of which sensing elements are being repaired or maintained, you
must ensure the engine T/A panel MAINTenance switch is in the vertical
position (power off) and the fire extinguishers must be deactivated.

AFES Cylinder Bottles - Removal and Installation.
In this part of the subcourse, you will learn how to remove and replace the
AFES cylinder bottles.
In Part C of this subcourse, you learned how to
deactivate the AFES before attempting to perform repairs or maintenance.
Therefore, before any attempt is made to remove the AFES cylinder bottles,
deactivation of the AFES must be accomplished. Refer to paragraphs 1 and 2
of Part C for review of the procedures used to deactivate the AFES. There
is a slight difference in the design of the engine AFES cylinder bottle
actuator assembly for vehicle series 1 through 344 and for series 345 and
above.
Figure 14 illustrates the actuator assembly for the engine AFES
cylinder bottles for vehicle series 1 through 344 and Figure 15 illustrates
the actuator assembly for series 345 and above. Procedures used to remove
the engine AFES cylinder bottles for both series of vehicles are similar
except for removal of the actuator cable connecting pin.
To avoid
confusion, Figure 14 will be used to illustrate the cylinder bottle
locations and components.
Figure 16 illustrates the components of the AFES/MDS. This figure is used
to help identify the components referenced during the adjustment of the
actuator cables for those cylinder bottles activated by the AFES/MDS.
Figures 17 and 18 are used to identify components of the crew AFES. Figure
17 shows the components of the crew AFES for vehicle series 1 through 344.
Figure 18 shows the components of the crew AFES for vehicle series 345 and
above.
Two additional fire extinguishers have been added to the crew
compartment of vehicle series 345 and above.
Sitting in the crew
compartment, facing to the rear, the two additional fire extinguishers are
located in the fire extinguisher box mounted at the left rear corner of the
crew compartment.
a. Engine AFES Cylinder Bottles. The engine AFES T/A panel MAINTenance
switch has been turned to the vertical position (no power).
After the
MAINTenance switch has been set to the vertical position, ensure all lights,
including POWER ON light, on the engine T/A panel goes off.
Move the
projectile racks to the rear of the crew compartment as shown in TM 9-2350-
267-10.
