The type of cargo transported by the M992 mandates a capability for
detection and suppression of hydrocarbon fuel fires in both the engine and
crew compartments.
The Automatic Fire Extinguisher System provides this
capability in both the manual and automatic mode.
In addition to fire
detection, the AFES can also detect overheating conditions in the engine
compartment.
There are three subsystems which make up the AFES.
These
subsystems are the engine AFES, the crew AFES, and the AFES manual discharge
system (MDS).
Figure 1 illustrates the components of each subsystem for
AFES vehicle series 1 through 344. Figure 2 illustrates the components of
each subsystem for AFES vehicle series 345 and above. Note that there are
some differences in vehicle series 1 through 344 and vehicle series 345 and
above.
These differences will be mentioned throughout the lesson as the
situation warrants.
