Some applications use a rheostat to adjust the resistance of the field current, thereby regulating
alternator output. The solid-state regulator virtually has replaced the mechanical units in all
currently produced equipment due to the extreme reliability and low manufacturing costs of solid-
state components. Another desirable feature of a solidstate regulator is that it can be made small
enough to be built into the alternator.
