PRACTICAL EXERCISE - ANSWERS
Requirement
a.
The material handling crane on the M977, with a load capacity of
2500 lb, has a boom radius of 19 ft.
b.
The fuel supply tank on the M978 fuel tank truck has a capacity
of 2500 gallons.
c.
The purpose of the semitrailer glad hands are to provide air to
the semitrailer brake system through interconnecting hoses.
d.
Power is supplied to the main steering gear by an engine driven
pump.  The fluid reservoir is shared with the main hydraulic system.
The steering wheel is mechanically linked to the main steering gear.
The motion is hydraulically transmitted to a piston in the slave gear,
causing it to follow the rotation of the main steering gear.  The main
steering gear pitman arm is mechanically connected to the slave gear
pitman arm.
These pitman arms move the steering mechanism on the
front axles left or right, causing the vehicle to steer left or right.
e.
The five general rules of troubleshooting are as follows:
1)
Read the Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet, DA
Form 2404, and question the vehicle operator to obtain any information
that may assist in determining the cause of the maintenance problem.
2)
Never overlook the chance that the maintenance problem could
be  of  simple  origin.
The  problem  could  be  corrected  with  minor
adjustment.
3)
Use all senses to observe and locate troubles.
4)
Use test instruments or gages to help determine and isolate
maintenance problems.
5)
Always isolate the system where the malfunction occurs and
then locate the defective component.
