(5) PartialSkirted (SlipperSkirt) Pistons (figure 16). The purpose of the
piston skirt is to keep the piston from rocking in the cylinder. The slipperskirt
piston has large portions of its skirt removed in the nonthrust areas. Removal of
the skirt in these areas serves the following purposes:
(a) Lightens the piston, which, in turn, increases the speed range of the
engine.
