FIGURE 17. ROOTES SUPERCHARGER.
Rootes-Type Compressor
The Rootes compressor, or blower, was designed especially for efficient diesel operation. It supplies the fresh
air needed for combustion and scavenging in two-cycle diesel engines. Its operation is similar to that of a
gear-type oil pump.
In the scavenging process, a charge of air is forced into the cylinder by the blower and thoroughly sweeps
out all of the burned gases through the exhaust valve ports. This air also helps to cool the internal engine
parts, particularly the exhaust valves. At the beginning of the compression stroke, after scavenging, each
cylinder is filled with fresh, clean air for efficient combustion.
