FIGURE 5. MAGNETIC LINES OF FORCE.
The lines formed about the magnet are known as LINES OF FORCE. Actually, the lines of force
extend all the way around the magnet instead of just in a flat plane as shown by the filings on the
paper. This is shown by the lines drawn at the end views of a bar magnet shown here. Note that
arrowheads have been placed on the lines of force here to indicate direction of movement. Also
note that the arrows indicate that the lines of force leave the north pole and enter the south pole.
