The oil pickup or inlet is usually mounted in the engine so that it extends down into the sump portion of the
oil pan. It has a screen which is made of wire mesh to strain the oil before it is delivered to the pump.
Some oil pickup screens are designed to float on top of the oil and rise or fall with the oil level in the pan.
Since dirt and water tend to settle in the bottom of the sump, the floating screen will pick up the cleanest part
of the oil.
