Procedural Steps for Installing the Steering Shaft Assembly.
Replace Steering Control Support Bearing.

STEERING SYSTEM - OD1605 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
WARNING
Failure of steering linkage can cause vehicle to
crash.
Crash  could  kill  or  injure  soldiers.
Equipment could be damaged.
Install NEW locknut
on shaft.
Step 3.  Install yoke (11) on shaft (12) by installing woodruff key
(16), two bearings (15), yoke (11), washer (14), and new locknut (13)
on shaft (12).
Torque locknut (12) to 20 - 30 ft-lb (3 - 4 m-kg)
using torque wrench (refer to figure 17 on page 25).
WARNING
Failure of control linkage can cause vehicle to
crash and cause injury or death.
Install NEW
cotter pins, locknuts, and lockwashers.
Step 4.
Install lever (18) and new spring (23) on shaft (24) by
installing screw (31) and nut (30) on lever (18).
Then, install
retainer (29), spring (23), washer (28), lever (18), washer (27), and
new locknut (26) on shaft (24).
A new cotter pin (25) is then
installed on shaft (24)(refer to figure 18 on page 26).
WARNING
Failure of steering linkage can cause vehicle to
crash.
Crash  could  kill  or  injure  soldiers.
Equipment could be damaged.
Make sure distance
from lever to cover is at least 1/4 inch.
Step 5.  Adjust support bearing (32) by placing cover (1) on hull and
raise or lower support bearing (32) on bracket (33) so that the
distance from top of lever (18) to cover (1) is at least 1/4 inch
(6mm).
Have  helper  assist,  during  this  step,  by  tightening  two
screws (34)(see figure 20 on the following page).
