INTRO TO M2/M3 BFV - OD0456 - LESSON 1/TASK 1
PRACTICAL EXERCISE - ANSWERS
The BFV can provide its own concealment through the use of two M257
smoke grenades simultaneously.
In addition to the smoke grenade
launchers, the BFV has a smoke generator built into the exhaust system
that allows it to lay a smoke screen to cover its retreat from or
entry to the battlefield.
There are four sensors
throughout the hull.
The M242 25mm automatic chain gun is the primary weapon of the BFV.
The M242 has a selective rate of fire of 100 rounds per minute on
single shot and 200 rounds per minute on automatic.
The gun fires
both armor-piercing and high explosive ammunition interchangeably.
The M242 is capable of defeating a Soviet-built BMP type light armor
vehicle at ranges in excess of 2,000 meters.
The primary mission of the M2/M3 is to provide motorized transport to
an infantry squad and direct fire support to already deployed infantry
The M2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is the version that
provides motor tranport to an infantry squad, while the M3 cavalry
fighting vehicle (CFV) provides direct fire support to already
deployed infantry squads.
