INTRODUCTION
Successful repair of equipment requires that you be familiar with the
basic
principles
of
operation,
safety
precautions,
equipment
components, and with the proper use of applicable technical manuals.
In this lesson, you will learn this information as it relates to the
X200-4  transmission.
The  X200-4  transmission  is  a  part  of  the
vehicle drive system in the M730A2 Guided Missile Equipment Carrier
and the M113A3 Armored Personnel Carrier.
PART A - INTRODUCTION TO THE CROSS-DRIVE TRANSMISSION
Several models of cross-drive transmissions are in use, differing in
some details from each other.
However, all of them operate in a
similar manner.
The  cross-drive  transmission  is  a  combination  transmission  and
steering unit for use on tracked vehicles.
It provides a hydraulic
drive through use of a torque converter, and contains the planetary
gearing,  steering  mechanism,  braking  mechanism,  and  hydraulically
operated clutches.
For purposes of this subcourse, location points
for the transmission, i.e., rear, right, left, and front, will be
determined by facing the identification plate which is mounted at the
rear of the transmission.
