FIGURE 30. VIBRATION DAMPER.
To reduce or stop torsional vibration, a weighted wheel is placed on the front end of long crankshafts, opposite
the flywheel. This wheel is referred to by such names as torsional balancer, vibration damper, and harmonic
balancer. The damper or wheel is usually built in two pieces and connected by some flexible method like a
friction clutch, rubber, or springs. Sometimes the two pieces separate or shift positions which may cause
unusual noises or vibration.
