SECTION I.
GENERAL
1.
INTRODUCTION.
a. The use of a welding torch in metalworking is by no means a new thing.  A
crude form of welding torch was used by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans
to work on precious metals.  The flame came from alcohol and other fluids.
Although acetylene was discovered as early as 1836, it was not widely used, except
in laboratories, until 1892 when a method of producing calcium carbide was
discovered.  The year 1903 marks the beginning of the oxyacetylene process for
general welding and cutting.
